A concerned university professor has expressed dismay at the pressure parents, guardians, teachers and indeed the country is putting on candidates to pass national exams.

Turkana University College Principal Egara Kajai Snr is worried that students are pushed to pass their exams instead of learning.

Kabaji advised parents that the purpose of enrolling children in school is for them to gain knowledge, not to score excellent grades especially in national exams.

"My fellow parents I want to humbly request you to remember that we take our children to school to learn and not to get grade "A". That mentality of expecting grade "A" from our kids is destroying this nation," Kabaji said.

The don said this after Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangí released the 2017 KCSE results.

As reported by TUKO Naomi Kawira of Pangani Girls emerged the best student with a straight A of 87.011 points.

Girls dominated the top 10 list, dealing a blow to the boys.

142 candidates scored straight A, one more than the 141 candidates in 2016.

Professor Kabaji is a journalist, scholar and researcher.
